5 Mistakes Learners Make on Practice Exams
Practice exams only help if you use them correctly. Avoid these five habits that quietly sabotage your score.
Practice exams are powerful — but only when they mirror how you’ll actually learn from mistakes.
1. Treating every attempt like the real exam
Timed, full-length mocks matter. But early on, untimed topic drills teach more. Mix both: drills for learning, mocks for stamina.
2. Skipping the review
Finishing a set and moving on wastes the attempt. For every wrong answer, write one sentence: why the correct option is right.
3. Only practicing what feels comfortable
Comfortable topics inflate your score and hide risk. Force practice into your weakest sections first.
4. Ignoring “almost right” answers
Guesses that happen to land still signal shaky understanding. Tag them and revisit the concept.
5. Never changing the filters
Once you’re past the basics, vary difficulty and unused questions. Fresh stems keep you honest.
Fix these habits and every practice session becomes a step up — not just another score on a screen.
